Observations from a self-confessed CakePHP newb

I’m an experienced web developer who’s dabbled in code over the years, starting with ColdFusion, moving to ASP, and now with PHP, mostly in the context of WordPress.

After one ill-fated Ruby on Rails project, I was sold on the idea of frameworks but also on the appeal of going with a language I actually know moderately well. I wavered between CodeIgniter and CakePHP but eventually decided to give CakePHP a go based on what seems to be the general consensus: “CodeIgniter is a great starter framework but CakePHP is where the power and better code is.” (Don’t beat me up if I got it wrong!)

I’m working with CakePHP on a couple of small projects to get a feel for it, and am mostly finding it straightforward, with a few quirks. This blog is my virtual notebook to document the things I’ve learned (and especially the things I know I’m going to have a hard time finding again later when I need them!). If it helps you, too, all the better. :)

Oh, yeah, and my name is Sarah Lewis and for my day job, I’m a blog developer. :)
